They were one week old and still havenât lost their cord. These little ones were not maintaining their body temperature when they arrived and sadly we lost one, but the rest are doing well today!â¤ď¸ If babies eyes are closed and get to cold for to long it can cause internal damage and it can…
Important: If you find a dead female opossum, check inside her pouch to see if she has babies. If she does, it is very important to remove the surviving babies off of her nipples ASAP to prevent them from ingesting rancid milk. As the motherâs milk goes sour after she is dead. â Fran Kitchen
Seven groundhog babies, one brought in alone and six from a liter. I also have one more that is a little older and aggressive. Enjoy! â Fran Kitchen A groundhog’s âjob” is to act as a primary excavator and soil engineer in its habitat, which has significant effects on the surrounding environment. As dedicated foragers…
These pictures were taken the day they were brought in. They were thinner then they should have been, an indication mom was no longer around. This black squirrel is not a true black squirrel. If you look up the black squirrel from Canada they look different. Grey squirrels come in various shades of grey. Black…
This baby season was one of them, can you guess what animal this is?⌠If you guessed a Vole , youâre right! Unfortunately, after 7 days of working to keep it alive, it aspirated and Fran lost him. đ˘ Voles are mainly vegetarians and aerate the ground. They are food for predators and play a…
Many people have no lost love for opossum. They do, however, have their purpose. They eat dead animals and those often have diseases. They donât contract those diseases; instead, they prevent the spread of diseases by cleaning things up. You are a healthier person because of the opossum. Photo credit: Dana Giron You can find…
Stimulation including interactive stimulation is very important for the animals that Fran rehabilitates. This red squirrel does not slow down and loves his wheel! 𤣠Next step for this little guy is that he is ready to move to a large outdoor cage.
This is why @oparun / riverkeepersohio.com is so passionate about mitigating and picking up trash. Itâs not just the turtles, its the geese, ducks, and other wildlife that suffer⌠not to mention humans.
Operation Orphan Wildlife Rehabilitation (Fran Kitchen) will be closed September 12, 2024 until October 1, 2024. Fran is going on a much needed vacation!! đ Baby animals will still be with her while she is away and during her trip she will be picking up an unreleasable fox that will be used in education and…
Thank God that I have my husband Ron to help me answer the phones (we can literally get over a 150-200 calls per day during baby season or bad weather) while I am doing all the things that need done to care for, feed, clean and house the animals. Not to mention running back and…
Remember the Least Weasel we posted about earlier in the month? He is almost full grown, does not like to be picked up and will be learning how to hunt for his own food soon. He also enjoys running his wheel, as you can see. 𤣠â Fran
This female Red Tail Hawk was brought in the first week of February. She had a broken wing. It was to late in the day to get her to Dr Riggs so first thing the next morning I took her to him. The day after I took her to Dr Riggs office she laid an…
They were certain that the cat had had it. I did not expect him to make it thru the night but he is 3 days into my care and taking formula and already has a sassy attitude. He will be a population controller. Milk belly! It is full! đđ¤Ł
It was under seven (7) days old and itâs toes were still fused together. At first I thought he had been washed out of itâs den from all the rain. After inspecting the little guy, I found three small puncture holes. Two on the shoulder and one on its back hip, which indicates a predator,…

This is a Squirrel’s Nest up close. There is a soft, cushioned area in the middle for the babies but the outer part is made of artfully placed sticks that are intertwined. Pretty impressive architecture. Photo taken by Dana Giron
Please be advised because Avian Influenza is still in Ohio and the fact that we do not have the space at our facility to quarantine we are not taking birds this year. I was informed earlier today that there is a rumor going around that we are not taking birds because we can not afford…
If you find babies in nests with water please use rags or paper towels and suck up the water. Dry the babies and place them in a box until later today when the nest is drier. Cover and leave them alone. Mom will not return to them until later today. Thank you!
In most cases these are fledglings exploring and learning how to fly. Momma is close by watching from afar. Unless these birds are obviously injured, LEAVE THEM ALONE! They are still dependent on their parents to teach them survival skills such as danger awareness, foraging for food and migration routes. – Fran Kitchen REMEMBER: Warmth…

Sadly, Amazon has pulled their ‘Amazon Smiles’ program. Instead of helping the âlittle guys’ which helped more than you or they will know, they are focusing their philanthropic giving to programs with greater impact and where it can make meaningful change. Of course, I have a lot to say about that but I won’t. For…
With Easter on its way and many people looking at buying baby bunnies and ducks as gifts, we are reposting a reminder: PLEASE DONâT DONâT BUY THEM!
The oldest are ready for release just as soon as the weather clears up. ‘I like to have two good weather days when I release the animals so they have time to acclimate and find or build shelter’ – Fran Kitchen ABOUT OPOSSUMS: Many people have no lost love for opossum. They do, however, have…

It was a dreary chilly December Sunday afternoon when the phone rang. On the other end of the line was a man that had a problem. He and his wife had gone outside, heard a noise in the tree and discovered a large Red Tail Hawk hanging from a crack in the tree. Currently, Iâve…
